Inspiration

Inspiration comes in many different shapes and sizes...and you must be open to it once it rears it's head. You must be willing to listen and accept it at face value and, most importantly, internalize it. Once you have internalized it and realize that it is authentic...well, then your journey begins.

Oh, and it is NEVER too late to begin this journey...

much love,

Forging Ahead with....BREATHE....

...my next album, BREATHE, has been on my mind quite a bit as of late. I'm so excited about beginning pre-production with this album soon. Danielle (my producer) and I will be getting together at an un-disclosed location to beging this process....arrangements...rehearsals, etc...until then, I'll be working with the musicians off and on to nail down some ideas....Scotty Malone....Dave Sawyer....Rob Rigoni....Eric Montgomery and Susan Renville. Susan and I have been working diligently to nail down great vocals. We are really working hard at developing a unique style...not just duet style like "A Metaphor" on September Sky...but, actual immersion in each other's vocal plates. The title track, BREATHE, really marries our vocals together in a Pink Floyd esque' style...other songs like "Lift You Up" and "Along this long and winding Road" have more standard type of harmonies, but very non-standard intervals. I believe that by changing it up on the different songs, it will create a unique yet versatile style.

I am also going to learn seven other Pink Floyd songs like Brain Damage, Breathe and High Hopes....to my current repertoire of Comfortably Numb, Hey You and Wish You Were Here. I believe that by marrying these Floyd covers up with my originals...it will do a few different things....strengthen my vocals....richen them up a bit....solidify my style in that I am really inspired by the pain and anquish of Floyd's compositions. I just love Pink Floyd....LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!!!

I believe that I still have some walls to break down dealing with my divorce of a year and a half ago...some trust issues with regards to fidelity, or the lack therof. But, no worries....pain is an avenue or opportunity to grow. I am hoping that the pain felt in September Sky will be reconciled in BREATHE. The songs that I have already written for this album are reflections....resolutions....forgiveness (dad)....etc....My hopes are that people who have gone through the same experiences will feel like they are not alone...and that somehow, some way...well, in short...they can be assisted in their healing process. Or at least have their eyes opened up to the fact that life does go on...move on....and, most importantly, get better. Yes, get better. Can you believe it? Ha....

So, I hope that you are following your dreams...living your life as you aspire to be a better person....paying it forward...listening, and most importantly, lauging and letting go.

much love,

The Poplar Tree

So, I'm on the road with business all this week....Wenatchee...Yakima....Idaho...Spokane...Montana....lots of miles, anyway, I was having a conversation with a friend of mine at the hotel I stay at in Spokane (Oxfords Suites)...Cindy. She was showing me photos of her home where they were removing a Poplar tree. I asked her why they were digging up the actual roots and stump and she told me that when you cut down a Poplar tree the roots will continue to grow. Even if the tree is gone? Yep...I found that interesting and existential in nature.

How does that relate to our lives? Well, things that we believe are important in life can be removed and as long as we have strong roots, support and a foundation, we will continue to grow.

There you have it my friends.

much love,

Listening to one another . . .

Being on both sides of the coin, I have come to realize that I am a huge sounding board for a lot of my friends. I love this, but feel somewhat burdened by it at times. Why, because I am no expert. I really don't feel qualified and, well...I don't want to steer anyone in the wrong direction. I have also been more aware that a few people out there have been watching out for me...listening, etc...so, what they say is true...you get what you give back....the whole pay it forward mentality.

In the end, and,yes...this is a short rant this evening due to my sore wrist (which I am in physical therapy for and is going well)....back on subject, listening provides us with an amazing amount of clarity in our own lives. So, this as much as a "note to self" as it is just putting it out there...

much love,

The Power of a COMMUNITY !

It is absolutely un-canny how powerful things are in numbers. The strength that can be dervied from a consensus of individuals and their ideas, words and wisdom. When one member (if you will) is down, there is another to lift them up....and vice versa. I believe we all know what surrounds us and are cogniscent of how it effects us, but...I do believe we tend (human nature) to stray from the path of least resistance and try it alone...solo....etc...we try to be strong. Funny thing...strong doesn't mean you go it alone...you never ask for help, it means you know what your strengths are and WHEN you need to reach out. Just my opinion, but I believe strength really lies in our abilities to recognize what we can cope with and what we CANNOT cope with? Maybe I'm crazy....maybe, that is good...maybe that is bad. Maybe the ones who are locked away in mental instutions by our society have it all together? Who knows....ok, maybe that is stretching it "a bit.' But, alas'...I know you get my meaning...

Why am I rambling about strength in numbers today? Hmmm....well, it has been a trying last few weeks and I need to heed my OWN advice. I surely hand it out, but need to take it now and by simply writing y little diatribe today, well...I'm reminding myself.

Life is good, but hectic. I'm pulled in quite a few different directions and at times just don't know how to cope. But, alas'...I'm surrounded by good friends who recognize this and have reached out and slapped me about a bit...a good thing, mwahahahahahahaha....anyway, again, another reminder of how inherently important it is in life to have a "tribe" that takes care of one another. We can't all be up at the same time...just as we can't be down all the same time....so where does that leave us? I'll tell you where....IN NEED OF A COMMUNITY. Like the Church utilizes "fellowship" as a community.....Sports utilize "teams"....you get the picture....

So, my goal for you who are reading this is to reach out....grab hold of the positive people in your life and bring them in.....rope them in and create your own community and gain power from it. You will grow, they will grow and together....well, together, your power will pay it forward.

Anyway, my ramblings for the day my friends....

Music is going great....My third album BREATHE is well on it's way to being finished as far as the WRITING element goes. I'm hoping to start recording early Spring....but, I have been playing songs from it at live shows....Breathe, Along this long and winding road, You Make My Blood Sing, Do You MInd If I Fall In Love With You?....etc...

much love,

What's new with Raymond?

What is new with Raymond? Hmmm...where o where to begin....

Lets start withthe re-structuring of my record label by my Associate Director of Business Development...the one and only Shelly Maas (www.mauricethefishrecords.com). Shelly is currently re-structuring staff duties and developing a strategic business/marketing plan for the label for 2009. We are prepping for Danielle's album release of RED LODGE (the end of October 2008) and the release of Rikk Beatty's album GUITAR FARM (the end of November 2008). All of the other artists (Rob Rigoni / Booju / Raymond Hayden) are at one stage or another of recording new albums as well.

Secondly, my music video was just accepted into the HDFest film festival in January of 2009. It was selected amongst many entries as one of the finalists, so...that is super cool. The director Arthur Reynolds, the Editor Fred Beahm and I will be traveling to LA for that festival. And, any of you who want to tag along...let me know...LET ME KNOW !!! If you still haven't seen it, go to the MEDIA page on my website and you'll be able to check it out.

Thirdly, Maurice the Fish (the all star cover band of the label) has been playing every single weekend for the past three months and actually has a break this weekend...CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT? Mind you , we want to play as much as we can, but you need a break every once in a while....phew. We actually just got back froma small tour in Alaska..the town of Yakutat doesn't know what hit em'...we had a blast and will hopefully be back next year for our third, YES, third trip there. Terri Downs and Susan Renville from my label and also good friends of mine went along and assisted. Terri cooked and Susan mades espresso as well as attending to our first aide needs and PR for the Glass Door (club we played at). We all made new friends and things went smoother cuz' of these two wonderful women. Also, DJ BIlly Rigoni (Rob Rigoni's brother) went along to DJ/Run Sound and just party in general. This DJBilly is something else and was a great addition to the fish and crew. He rocked the AK baby !!!! We'll have him back for sure...

Fourthly, I have created a piano "back to basics workout" and am excited about getting on-top of some new ideas I have for songs. I almost forgot, I performed on four of Rikk's songs on his up and coming album "Guitar Farm"...at the last minute he asked me to do this and I was simply honored. Two synth songs and two piano songs to accompany his already beautiful acoustic guitar work.

Other than that, just livin' life...experiencing new things...writing new music...spending time with family, friends and making new fans and friends a like. Please keep checking my schedule...we have some non-private shows coming up:

October 25th - Rock Bottom Brewery (Bellevue, WA) Maurice the fish
October 31st - Hilander Bowl Halloween Party (Kelso, WA) Maurice the Fish
November 5th - Tempest Lounge (Tacoma, WA....on Martin Luther King and 9th)
*Label showcase w/Guest Artists Paula Stentz (MTF Artists: Rob Rigoni / Raymond Hayden
and Susan Renville....and extra special guest guitarist: Scotty Z...Malone)
December NYE - Kah Nee Tah / Warm Springs, OR (RESORT)

More in the works....

Much Love....

BREATHE (New Song)

Hey...sorry I haven't BLOGGED in a while....been very busy with work and music....

So, tonight I was practicing my piano basics and came up on an idea for a song....entitled BREATHE:

"Breathe"
words/music: raymond hayden

Waiting arms, hold your mind, painting pictures in the sky,
Of a life, that you’ve seen…leave the emptiness behind.

Oh my God, can’t you see, what this life has given me,
The air to breathe, the chance to be…an entity that plants the seed.

The time has come, the angels sing, a song that everyone believes,
Will set them free, to make the choice, open hearts…set love free.

Close your eyes, it’s time to go, reach your hand out to a soul,
That’s been lost, left behind….wanting desperately to find…

Their way back home, it’s not too late, the answers not a simple fate,
You must believe, the things you see…aren’t always as they appear to be.

Oh my God, can’t you see, what this life has given me,
The air to breathe, the chance to be…an entity that plants the seed.

Not exactly sure what I'm saying, but I'm sure I'll figure it out...

Much Love.....

Understanding is the beginning...

Whether you want to call it understanding or empathy, it really can be summed up by taking the time to really truly understand where someone is coming from. Knowing where someone is coming from can really relate to state of mind...awareness and explain their actions and maybe even intent. Why am I bringing this up you ask? Well, lately there has been a few things that have come up in my life where emotion drove emails...phone calls...frustrations and when all was said and done, it all came down to someone being in a state of either chaos or experiencing a higher level of stress than normal.

So my friends, my intent today is to let you know what I learned....simple, pick up the phone and call that person. First question may be something like this:

"...so, how are you today? I was just thinking about you and thought I'd drop a line. We recently had a , well, I believe, a mis-understanding. I'm sorry on my end if I contributed to any hard feelings, but I noticed that you responded differently than you normally would. Is there something going on outside of our situation that I can help with...I care?..."

Anyway, every situation is different...and, well...I don't know, but hard feelings suck and life is too short.

On a different note...My passion is music...I do music EVERY single day. What is YOUR passion and how often do you do it?

Much love....

I Feel the Change

So, I grabbed a beer to end the evening and was inspired to write a new song....therapeudic as usual....it is called, I Feel the Change:

I Feel the Change

What if I said Today, I was ready to look away…
From a world that was willing to let me drift away?
And what if I said today, I was ready to walk away…
Break these chains, pave the way, live today…take a chance and change?

Whooaah, Yeah…I feel the change.
Whooaah, Yeah…it’s stronger every day.
Whooaah, Yeah…I don’t know what to say?
Whooaah, Yeah…I feel the change…

What if I said today, I know that I need this change,
Look away from the past…livin’ in yesterday.
And what if I said today, oh my friends showed me the way,
Now it’s time that I show them it was well worth price we paid.

Whooaah, Yeah…I feel the change.
Whooaah, Yeah…it’s stronger every day.
Whooaah, Yeah…I don’t know what to say?
Whooaah, Yeah…I feel the change…

The piano music is really simple and in the key of Bb...I only put that because some of my guitarist friends just LOOOOOVE that key....

mwahahahahahaha....

I may perform it at the TEMPEST show this Wednesday.

much love,

raymond

p.s. M21 (Remember a few years ago...maybe I should have written this song then...hmmm.... =))
